Calvaire; The Ordeal

"Ah Belgium... Home of the weird, the sick and the sexually perverted!" -Coventry

The notorious bar dance scene.

Official trailer

Calvaire, a.k.a The Ordeal is mainly a Belgian production and – being a Belgian myself – I'm rather proud of that, although it also once again illustrates that the only cult and controversial horror films coming from this country pretty much all revolve on sexually perverted characters! Lucker served us the diary of a necrophiliac and the ultra-rare film Vase de Noces (which I haven't seen yet) handles about the sexual relationship between a farmer and his pig. At several points in the film, Calvaire hints at bestiality as well and the least you can say about all the characters, even the unimportant ones, is that they're heavily struggling with their hormones all together. The honest and hard-working singer Marc Stevens is on his way to a Christmas gig when his van breaks down on a rural road near a remote village. A loyal young man guides Marc to Paul Bartel's godforsaken hotel and that's where the madness really begins. Bartel is obtrusive and overly friendly at first but gradually his traumatized mind begins to mistake Marc for his own adulterous wife who left him. For Marc begins a nightmare in which he's dressed up in woman's clothes, tortured and forced to have sexual intercourse. Even when he manages to escape into the forests he isn't safe, as all the local rednecks are deranged deviants as well.

The subject matter of Calvaire sounds pretty devastating, but it actually comes across as a black comedy most of the time. It's an absurd film with disturbing undertones and grisly images, yet the surreal atmosphere and the overuse of stereotypes almost makes it a comical experience. You can summarize this film as being a demented and typically European interpretation of classic backwoods-thrillers such as Deliverance and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. The hillbillies are crazier, the situations are more grotesque and the perversion is a lot less subtle. Especially considering Calvaire was the debut project for most of the crew members involved, the film is exceptionally well-made! The cinematography is stunning to observe most of the time, with beautiful images of large and ominous forests, and the interior filming locations are dark & creepy. The acting performances are a bit weak sometimes but still endurable. Regretfully, the script also features a couple of tedious moments and it leaves quite a bit of questions unanswered when the film is finished. Nonetheless, Calvaire is destined to be a cult favorite in the near future (if it isn't one by now) already and fans of odd, offbeat cinema can't afford themselves to miss it! -imdb

Sleep Whale - Little Brite

A twenty-six minute electro-acoustic soundtrack to a summers-day is what this Texas outfit offers on their six track EP. Imagine laying on your back in a park, drifting away on the tones of a skilled fingerstyle guitarplayer sitting on a bench improvising on the downtempo electronica from some kid down the street checking out the latest hip Japanese cupboard idm. Add the organic flow of waves caressing - and subtly refracting - a production floating on warm strings and you end up with half an hour of breezy summer bliss. A successful exercise in a genre labeled as electro-acoustic from a band we hope to hear more from in the future.

MGR (Mustard Gas and Roses) - Wavering on the Cresting Heft.

I love MGR; it's slow, it's dark, it's beautiful sadness on vinyl I want to be devoured by at massive volumes...

The sleeve note describes it rather well:
MGR is an emotionally charged amalgamation of sounds that, much to it's credit, refuses to fit neatly into any particular category. MGR's effectiveness stems from how fluidly Mark Gallagher - of renowned dirge architects Isis - is able to gradually add texture upon texture, building up the intensity of the tracks until they reach a tragic momentum. Imagine Isis with much of the bombast stripped away, leaving only dark, moody and melancholic soundscapes...

Read up on my findings of Wavering Radiant here. Both the Isis & MGR albums are released by Conspiracy Records with much love and eye for detail, as always.

There even is a print on the inside of the gatefold sleeve... wow.

Sleepingdog - Polar Life

first review of 2009 is up and it's advised you give this a listen ;)

Sleepingdog is the outcome of Chantal Acda's need to have an musical outlet when she was working on the Iceland-inspired album Tonar under the moniker Chadca. Without the intention to release anything, she headed for the basement where she recorded and channelled her emotions in the minimalistic music she experimented with at the time. Afterwards she impulsively decided to release the material on Naked In A Clean Bed which is, in comparison with the sound-exploring album Tonar, an artist's fragile foray into her capacity for evoking emotions. Polar Life continues in that fashion with a sound that is still a bit rough on the edges, but more beautiful than before. Basement static is traded in for a warm tape-brown analog filter. The music is layered with vocals that are treated just like any other instrument and have been handsomely tweaked accordingly. Imagine the town of Twin Peaks hosting an "Island Airwaves" day, where you find yourself sitting on a table in the Black Lodge and you'll have the perfect setting to be touched by the album's soothing properties.

a little introduction for those who haven't had the pleasure: "Opeth is a progressive death metal band from Sweden that is influenced by many diverse musical styles ranging from jazz, 70s progressive rock, death metal, and blues. Their recent releases have deviated from their traditional death metal influenced style, with more emphasis on progressive elements. Vocalist Mikael Åkerfeldt is also noted for utilizing both clean singing and death growls, often in the same track. Due to their unique blend of melodic and progressive elements, Opeth are often classified separately from more typical death metal acts. The name Opeth was taken from Wilbur Smith’s novel Sunbird and derived from Opet, a city of the moon named in the novel." -Last.fm

For me this band has been a stepping stone into genres and music scenes I've never even dreamed of existing. 'Canterbury' & 'progg' were things I didn't know off and not even taking in consideration that this also resulted in rediscovering my love for vinyl records. Anyways, during their European Tour 2008 Opeth played in my favourite venue, Amon Tobin recently called it "arguably the best sound system in Europe", the Ancienne Belgique in Brussels, BE. Below, the video's of their set (almost complete).

Describing Audrey’s music is no easy task. If the group has succeeded in finding a central theme, it’s a balance in the melodies - shimmering, beautiful moments of pop meet dark sadness.
The harmonies (everyone in the group shares vocal efforts) shift quickly between keys and moods. Straightforward, conventional narrative is replaced by abstract meanings which strengthen the melodies. -Last.fm

Static captation of their set on November 21st, 2008 at the Arenberg Schouwburg in Antwerp, BE.

Opening that night, surprisingly, was Mrs. Hyde, playing an acoustic set. No captions of this because of some regretted, self-imposed 'no opening act policy' but make sure to check them out...

Transit

Transit are four Belgian post-rocking ornithologists, Jeroen (guitar), Toon (bass), Koen (drums) and Nick (guitar), with a passion for nature, emotions and all kinds of music. This is more or less the essence of Transit; more words about them would just be tiresome; so they just hope you enjoy their music as much as they enjoy playing it!

I've seen this band play now three times and each time their music will fill up the room and suck you into their cinematic, slow coresque post-rock as if you've known them for years. I've rounded up some goodies of the band... enjoy.

Greetings From Houssit City

Erwtensoep woensdag

As the fall is reaching it's peak, the omens of winter are starting to reveal themselves... Frost by night, fog in the morning... bright, sunny yet cold days.

As it was this morning, what we refer to as 'erwtensoep' around the Gloomvillian area, it can make up for some interesting sights. It's a shame my only slightly decent means to capture this perishing phenomenon, being a tiny digital camera, decided to start ignoring shades of yellow and green. But nevertheless it is all I got at hand and it did make up for an interesting colour scheme. Click the image below to see the gallery of the few impressions I made...

Bohren und der Club of Gore @ ABclub

On October 15th 2008, the majestic Ipecac funeral doom jazz act Bohren und der Club of Gore played their second show on their European tour at the Ancienne Belgique Club. Opener for the night was Alexander Tucker, until a few weeks ago a complete stranger for me. He displayed some novice use of stringed instruments and even more fx & loop pedals but scheduling him before Bohren wasn't the best move in the history of opening act planning.

Anyways, gloomy Wednesday night in Brussels, a small club and some doomy deep resonating funeral jazz... an ideal gig to be sitting on the frontline bass speakers with a fresh Duvel beer while the camera struggles to keep focus with all that bass.

Anekdoten - live at JH Soho 2008

Only a few months after seeing them live the first time at the 21st Anniversary Schizoid Boat, Anekdoten toured around Europe. Making their second stop on May 10th at the unmatched JH Sojo, Leuven BE, for another brilliant show.

Anunnaki, the support act was the perfect opener for the night, psychedelic ebow & other soundwaves injected along with some old-skool, liquid retro psychedelic slideshow while puffing away... it was a great first encounter with this band...

Anekdoten proved themselves to be one hell of a tight live act once again. I could go on about how good they were, but why should I if you can see it for yourself hu...? I was there at the frontline, and so was the handheld video capturing device.

Arm België I: verkiezingsdag 2007

No problemo dacht ik... 'pfffw' zelfs.

'Like you give a fuck about it!' dacht ik dan.

"Ja?

Paatos @ the Spirit of 66

On October 29th, 2006 the Swedish melancholic post-rock-ish band Paatos played at the infamous Spirit of 66, Verviers, BE. They were supported by the UK band Lo-ego who has, after a short 'reconfiguration' named The Earth Died Screaming, disbanded in the meanwhile.

For me this gig was sort of a mile- and stepping stone in the Swedish contemporary prog rock/metal scene and the most astonishing 'progg' scene. Being able to discus all these with the band themselves after the gig was most memorable -to say at least- hanging out and just doing some 'prata strunta' once the Spirit closed created a small bond that would prove to be rather strong on later encounters.

It was also here that I had the luck of meeting Stefan Dimle -bassplayer of Paatos, Morte Macabre and the late Landberk-, owner of the Mellotronen record store & label who was just starting of promoting the 20th Anniversary Melloboat cruise. A 'solid ground' was layed down for future encounters and some more mindbending musical discoveries.

To cut it short, a memorable first Paatos gig (for me), a first Spirit of 66 experience and the pleasure of being one of the privileged to witness Lo-ego in all it's, short lived, glory.

Footage below is of Paatos' gig, before their gig we, Prockmedia, also had the opportunity to interview the vocalist Petronella Nettermalm about life on the road and the general Paatos experience... I'll be holding the interview back for now since it will be put to good use on the Prockmedia project one day... hopefully.
